If you are having difficulties with your present bank because they are charging too much interest on your credit card, or fees for overdrafts, whether you are a private individual or a business, you might think about opening an account with a local community bank.
Small business bank are just that; the employees live in the local area and the branches of the bank are located in the communities they serve not in the business downtown area. That means that if you want to discuss a loan or a mortgage or the state of your account, you can have an appointment and easily get to the bank. Community banks understand the needs of the communities they serve, so if you are facing difficulties, but know they are just temporary, the bank staff is more likely to listen with a sympathetic ear. They understand the situation in the local area and you may even know the employees or even the bank owner or manager, as they come from within the community. Bigger banks operate across states, but a smaller community bank may serve a state or a smaller area within a state.
Community banks can be more flexible than the corporate ones which want to make money first and foremost. If they can make a charge for a service they will, but a community bank may well forego charges in order to keep your custom. Community banks will try to match your needs and give you many of the options you get as to which account type you open as the bigger banks.
You money is safe in community bank as long as they one of the institutions which is a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), so it is as safe as it would be if you had an account with one of the big corporate banks.
You can have deposit box facilities, a checking or savings account, and best of all a personal relationship with the people you bank with. It is often easier to get approval for a loan or mortgage from a small bank such as a community bank simply because that is what it is- a bank that serves the community. The bank will still have your credit report, but is more likely to be sympathetic to a genuine tale of woe than a bigger bank. There are reasons why people are late with payments and a community bank is more likely to give you a loan than a bigger bank.
Whether you want a business checking account or a personal account, you should consider your options and the convenience of the small community bank in your local area.
